Engineer from Fukushima shows bioplastics molding tech in Germany

17 October 2019

Michio Komatsu, president of plastics technology consulting office Komatsu & Associates in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, showcased his patented molding technology for plant-derived plastics at K 2019, the world’s largest trade fair for plastics and rubber that opened on Oct. 16 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

At the event, he demonstrated technology he has developed to enable mass production of champagne glasses from polylactic acid resin, a kind of bioplastic. Molding of thin products with the material had been considered difficult with conventional methods. Komatsu said he wants to continue working to contribute to reducing marine plastic waste.
